The free X-Mouse Button Control application lets you change the way your mouse works and lets you assign various actions to mouse buttons. With this application you can, for example, set it up so that when you right click, the browser launches. There are a variety of actions you can assign to all your mouse buttons and to the scroll wheel.

To get started with X-Mouse Button Control you will first have to download a 4.0MB installation file onto your PC. Run said file to install the application on top of anything from Windows 2000 up to Windows 7. A simple setup wizard will guide you through the installation process and once it’s done, it will launch your browser and take you to a “thank you for installing” webpage.

While X-Mouse Button Control is running, you will see a mouse icon in the system tray; the number on top of the icon represents the layer that’s currently selected. To access the application’s Setup window (from where you can specify how X-Mouse Button Control behaves and customize the layers) you need to double click the system tray icon or right click it and select Setup.

When you start using X-Mouse Button Control, you only have one profile, the default profile. For this profile, and for all the profiles you will create in the future, you have 5 layers to define. This means that you can create profiles and come up with application or window-specific mouse mappings, and you can set up 5 layers that define what the mouse buttons do. The profiles will activate automatically when you place the mouse over the defined application or window; hotkeys can be assigned so that you can easily switch from one layer to another.

A very basic example of what you can do with X-Mouse Button Control is this: you can set it so that when you press the right mouse button, your default browser launches. There are, of course, numerous other functions to choose from and assign to your mouse buttons (or to the scroll wheel).

X-Mouse Button Control is freeware.

You can remap your mouse controls and enhance the functionality your mouse provides for free with the X-Mouse Button Control application.

Pros

Takes little time to install the application on a Windows-powered PC. Create profiles, set up 5 layers for each profile. The profiles activate automatically, the layers can be enabled using hotkeys. Use X-Mouse Button Control to remap mouse controls and enhance the functionality the mouse has to offer. X-Mouse Button Control is free.

Cons

None that I could think of.
